Mission: A New Beginning
On:
Marius sat in his ready room, looking over the stack of pads that had accumulated over the past few days. He had not realized how... almost normal things would feel in such a short time. Four months ago, the Ocampan home world was a desert wasteland, and now it was a thriving class M planet, and the new Federation Headquarters was growing right along with it.
Jordan stopped outside Marius ready room and took a deep breath. He rang the buzzer, smiling to himself as the old temptation to just walk in, regardless of protocol almost overtook him. His eyes met Pontmercys. "Morning boss."
"Good morning," Marius said with a smile and motioned for his Executive Officer to have a seat. "How are you Jordan? I feel like I haven't had a chance to catch up with you in a long time."
Jordan smiled. "I am good. Glad to finally have a chance to sit down with you where we don't feel like we are going in a million directions." Marius nodded.
"With the increase in our ranks over the past few months, I am glad to see this plan actually working. Have you had a chance to check in with Security, Operations, and the Marines to see how the training and implementation is going?"
"Things are going well with them." Jordan replied. "I am impressed by what they have accomplished so far."
"Okay excellent. A representative from the Ocampan government wants to meet with us later today, so make sure you're available for that. What's the status of the base repairs and refits?"
"It is coming along." Jordan replied. "Not as quickly as I would like." He sighed. "I keep on them and I think they are getting tired of listening to me push them." He grinned then, he knew that he had a reputation of being like a dog with a bone.
"As long as no one ends up in the brig I think we will come out ahead," the Captain replied, hiding a smile. "How are you doing Jordan? I haven't been able to touch base, I feel so disconnected these days."
"I am good." Jordan replied honestly. "We've been through a lot and its been a process but we came out ahead." He paused. " It was a lot to deal with but I am choosing to move forward."
"I'm glad to hear it." Marius shifted in his seat. "Things are quiet around here for now, especially since most of the Admirals and the President moving their operations to the new Headquarters on the planet. We will keep their quarters and offices active onboard the base of course, but we need a plan for what to do with the rest of their decks."
"Hmmm." Jordan said, giving it some thought. "One thought is that our medical department is not big enough. I think we've learned that they need more room given emergency situations. Perhaps engineering could n help develop a plan to move some things around."
"Not a bad idea," Marius said after a moment thought. "I've wanted to establish a hospital, or at least the bones of one, especially as we grow. See if you can meet with Engineering and Operations and get a plan together."
"I will " Jordan paused. "One other idea. Coming from a security perspective it would be beneficial to give security an area for practice sessions other than the holders. A place to train and run through scenarios. I am sure Jude would be open to the idea."
"Make it happen," Marius said in agreement. "I'm sure our Marines do not mind sharing their training facilities, but giving them their own would be helpful. I also want to increase flight patrols with our Starfighter wing. I know it has been quiet, but we do not know what is out there."
"That is a sound plan." Jordan agreed. He grinned then, that grin he used to frequent when he was younger and wilder. "Who would have thought we'd sit and agree without me starting some trouble."
"Certainly not me," Pontmercy said with a wry smile. "There were days I wanted to send you packing so badly. You were TERRIBLE with authority. But look at you now! Despite everything, you're thriving out here."
"I still have my moments." Jordan smiled. "That is when I disappear on my days off. That Jordan is a part of who I am."
*We all still contain bits of who we were, what we went through, the people we loved and lost. It's our foundation." Marius said, lost in thought for a moment. He then looked at Jordan with a slight twinkle in his eyes. "I heard through the grapevine that you are not such a solo man these days."
"It's true." Jordan smiled. "I honestly never wanted to give that part of me to anyone but I knew when I first met her she would take my heart. It was the trust that was hard but I trust her with all of me." He laughed then. "And she doesn't let me get away with anything."
"Nor should she," Marius said, truly happy for his friend. He was not usually so close with his crew, but over the many years the pair had become friends, and how could they not after everything? "I wish you well, of course." He glanced out the viewport behind him. "It's so strange, not seeing familiar stars."
"Our universe has changed." Jordan nodded, feeling the same way. "It feels like we lost our home, those stars were our refuge." Pontmercy sighed.
"Well we are making a new refuge. In time, perhaps this too will feel like home." He sat up straighter and smiled. "Thank you for coming Commander. Let me know what you come up with after meeting with Engineering and Operations. Dismissed."
"Yes, Caotain." Jordan acknowledged, heading out the door, he walked along thinking that though much had changed, the people hadn't and that was something no one could conquer. As long as they breathed, the Federation lived.
